South Africa is a world class paragliding destination. There are spectacular flying sites in and around Wilderness and Cape Town, take a tour below.

Landing field .. after flying down from Lion's Head
Lion's Head is the site we fly most in summer because of the stunning views, consistently good flying conditions and easy landings.
We paraglide off Lion's Head with a light sea breeze blowing up the mountain or in 'wind shadow' - when Table Mountain shields Lion's Head from the prevailing South East Wind.
We walk part of the way up the hill (10 to 20 mins) so bring a hat, water and sun block. We land on the beach at Camps Bay or on the field shown above (a restaurant called La Med - great for sundowners).
Meeting for Lion's Head
We meet at the first car park that you come to when going up Signal Hill Drive - the road opposite where you turn to go to the Cable Station for Table Mountain. You will see lots of cars and a wooden Parks Board hut.
Meeting for Signal Hill
If conditions are better at Signal Hill then we will fly there. It is a further 5 minute drive past the Lion's Head car park to the end of the road.

View of the beach at Llandudno where we land.
We paraglide at a number of beautiful locations all around the Cape Peninsula depending on the prevailing conditions and particular requests from our clients.
Llandudno is a firm favourite and is flyable in light NW conditions.
Macassar is a low cliff site on the False Bay coastline. Here we soar with the seagulls above the waves. The site is largely sand dunes with sections of rocky cliff and is great for flying.
Noordhoek Peak is one of the most scenic flights in Cape Town. We take off well above Chapman's Peak Drive and paraglide down to Hout Bay. The wind conditions for this site are quite specific so it is not flown as often as the other sites.
Meeting
Full directions will be provided, if we haven't met you in town and given you a lift!

High at Sir Lowry's Pass with The Strand in the background.
Sir Lowry's Pass is flown almost as often as Lion's Head. We fly here in SW to NW winds and take off from the 'view site' at the top of the pass.
We cruise along to mountains higher than Table Mountain or we fly towards Gordon's Bay and the False Bay coast.
Hermanus is another very popular paragliding site. It has smooth soaring in a South East sea breeze, overlooking the historic town of Hermanus.
Hermanus is a whale watcher's paradise in the right season and well worth a visit after the flight.
Meeting for Sir Lowry's Pass
We meet at the view site at the top of Sir Lowry's Pass. If you take the N2 out of Cape Town you will drive over Sir Lowry's. It is about a 40 minute drive from the centre of Cape Town.
For Hermanus keep going on the N2 and follow the signs. Just before entering the town turn left up Rotary Way and keep going till you see the site on your right.

The Porterville ridge in the background .. shortly after take off
Porterville is probably the premier cross country site in South Africa and offers excellent thermic flying, especially in the summer months.
This is the site where most solo paraglider pilots go for their weekends and if cross country is the order of the day, this is where we're likely to go.
If you're truly interested in paragliding as a sport then a flight at Porterville is a great introduction.
On cross country flights we have lots of time to talk about how we fly the glider as well as enjoying the views of the impressive Cedarburg mountains.
Porterville is about 1.5 to 2 hours drive from Cape Town. We usually travel together to this site.

View of a tandem ... taken from the launch site
Sedgeview, the paragliding site above Sedgefield is the premier flying site on the Garden Route offering consistent thermals and soaring conditions, quite often in the company of the resident Fish Eagles.
Flying from here couldn't be easier - we take off and land on the same grassy slope after about 20 minutes of cruising along the ridge and climbing in thermals.
The thermals usually mean that height gains of about 350m are not uncommon.
Meeting for Sedgefield
If you're coming from Knysna, take the first road on the right as you enter Sedgefield, then follow the yellow paragliding signs.
If you're coming from Wilderness, take the last road on the left as you leave Sedgefield town centre, then follow the yellow signs.

View from the Map on a beautiful soarable day
The Map of Africa, overlooking the town of Wilderness, is one of the best soaring sites on the Garden Route.
The take off site is a large grassy field and this, together with the smooth flying conditions, makes this the premier site in the country for paragliding students. Many paraglider pilots have their first high flights at this site - soaring some 200m above the waves.
Works in winds from S to SE
Meeting for the Map of Africa
Drive into the town of Wilderness and take the old 'George Road' up the hill. Look for signs to 'Map of Africa' and follow them right to the site.
You will probably see lots of hang gliders and paragliders on the site, so come looking for us!

Flying Gerricke's Point .. at the end of Paradise Ridge
Paradise Ridge allows an 8km long flight along the coast from Wilderness to Sedgefield. There are a number of take off sites each of which provide easy launching.
Kleinkrantz - launching from the sand dunes to start your flight right at the beginning of the ridge.
Gerricke's Point - as you can see from the photo above, Gerricke's offers spectacular views and is a truly beautiful place to fly from.
Meeting for Kleinkrantz
Leaving Wilderness and heading towards Sedgefield take a right signposted turn into Kleinkrantz. Follow the yellow paragliding signs to the far end of the beach.
Meeting for Gerricke's
Turn off the N2 at the sign to Gerricke's and stop at the restaurant immediately on your right where we need to sign in for access to the site.
The Beach Hotel
Right on the beach, sandwiched between Wilderness' new boutique hotel and the Beach Hotel is a patch of grass that is an ideal place to launch your paraglider for a flight over the beaches of Wilderness.
The flying here is low and we skim the houses and sand dunes of Wilderness beach.
This is a truly unique flight and one of our customers' favourites!
Meeting for the Beach Hotel
Drive out of Wilderness town centre in the Direction of Knysna and take a right a few km out of town at the first petrol station you see on the right.
If you are a visiting paraglider pilot, or simply wish to know more about the flying sites in the country, we strongly recommend you purchase a copy of The Fresh Air Site Guide by Greg Hamerton.
